Memory box #3

The summer of '83 my high school buddy and I drove across the country. It was a month long trek that we had planned and saved up for. If I recall correctly, we both saved $1100. I had a little pickup truck with a camper on it with a bed and kitchenette. No toilet. We stayed at campgrounds and in big cities we just parked on the street and slept. I wonder how much a trip like this would cost nowadays? Triple? Quadruple?

When spouse saw this picture he said, "Gawd, you still have that shirt!" He's incorrect as I have a similar shirt now, but I think it's funny that he thinks I've been wearing the same shirt for 25 years. Now, how many of you can say you've had your rump in four states at once?

  1. I spent a month on the Navajo rez when I was in school, but I never made it to Four Corners. I have, however, visited every US state except Arkansas and Alaska so far. Plus 5 Canadian provinces.

  2. What a fantastic picture! And what a great trip. Were you still friends by the end of it?

    Wow. Blonde.

  4. I can't. The best I can do is three countries at once: the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

  5. You look still cute, then and now!

  7. Aww, ya should've let him think it's the same shirt :)

I love those four state corners. As a kid, that was just plain magical to me. Who am I kidding, I still think it's cool.

  8. Sure I have.

    Oh, sorry, you said "states."

Gawd you look adorable in that shot.

  9. I remember when those baseball shirts were all the rage.

I have a sweater I have had since 1986. I wear it every winter with nostalgia.

I'm not even touching the rump in the four corners thing.

  11. Look at you! All young and cute. Now you are a tad bit older, but still cute. I may have to start digging through my memory box for younger photos to post.

  12. I am going to so not go there and take the high road instead.

Speaking of high roads, my dream vacation is a road trip down the Pacific Coast Highway, in a convertible. Who's coming with me?

  13. oh, believe me, I've had my arse in 4 states at once...but since I'm the kind of guy that doesn't allow anyone "back there," it really doesn't matter. And, simply as a side note here, if I'd seen your pretty sassy carefree face sitting on the four corners, I'd have slipped you my mobile phone number....oh, wait we didn't have mobiles WAY back then. Needless to say, I'd have drug you out behind the woodshed. Happy days, weren't they????

  16. There's nothing wrong in my book about keeping a hirt for sentimental reasons. I have loads of shirts I got at concerts. I even have a few that remind me of people or events.

    BTW, the picture is adorable.

  17. I've always wanted to take a cross country trip like that!

    You were blond in '83?

    Mark :-)

  18. I would love to take a couple months and do a trip like that today!

  19. Wow, $1100 was a lot back then. I'm surprised it cost that much.

I haven't had my ass in 4 states at once, no. Nor has anyone else had my ass in 4 states. At once.

I wouldn't mind taking a trip like that right now. Just up and leave it all behind. *sigh* Maybe someday.

  20. So you've been to Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Arizona. I've always wanted to go to the Four Corners Monument. I've never been farther west than Ohio. Handsome as a blond but better looking with age. How come that happens to men? Us ladies just look old.

  22. I like the idea of sitting in the center of four states. By the way you were a handsome 18yrs old. Those are great memories to have being free to travel where ever you want with a friend, pull over at a rest stop or RV camp and sleep. No work worries, etc.

  23. Lordy but you were beautiful. Now you're "just" strikingly handsome.

I have several 25 year (or more) old shirts that I lovingly preserve because they were and are great designs and I was never a this season's fashion whore. I actually prefer not to be wearing what everybody else is wearing.

Well, I actually prefer wearing nothing, but that's another story entirely.

  24. You're the same age as my brother! I now want to annoy the crap out of you and sneak into your room and move stuff around and steal things I know you'll be going insane over later on.

  25. Indeed I have been to that exact spot, although I don't remember sitting on it. I danced around it, though, does that count? I was there a few years before you made this stop.

Honey, I'd have had a crush on you so bad when I was that age.
