For example

A big problem I have with fashion: Complete counterintuitive clothing.

Every era and group seems to have it. I go to a club where people might be expected to dance, and half the people are wearing the same GIANT construction boots. A real construction worker, (who would have a logical need for such boots) would never wear his "work shoes" for a night out. But this has become a staple of late night (insert favorite gay euphemism here) haunts. There was a time when I lusted and craved those boots, and went so far as to try them on, but as soon as I did, I thought it was like having ridiculous bulky weights on the feet. (Plus, there was this voice screaming in my head, "You pathetic sheep you, you're not going to buy such impractical things now are you?") I have hiking boots, but hiking boots don't cut it now, do they boys?

Remember when Sperry Topsiders were all the rage? Boat shoes. Shoes specifically manufactured for the vagaries of standing upright on a ship. Yet, there we were lining up for them because they were "in". I wanna be in, can I can I. ( What, too sarcastic?)

Obviously you'll agree that the male portion of the younger generation is fixated on wearing pants that are so long and so low that tripping is caused and walking must be altered in order to keep the pants from falling off. Still, it charms me in a way.

You know who got it right? It's the arabs. (Am I allowed to say that?) They all get to wear the same white gown. No tight-fitting belts or ties, just a lovely billowy thing that let's you move about freely and comfortably. Why can't that be the fashion? Something practical, something that can let me focus on the more important parts of you, like your mind, or if you're wearing any underwear under there.

  1. I couldn't afford the real topsiders; so I bought mine at Kinney's.

Remember there was a special way to wind the leather ties together? I was very proud I figured out how to do that.

Sad thing is, I still love topsiders. I get mocked by my younger friends, but I still have a pair. And this time they're the real thing.

  2. I've always strived for anti-fashion. It's easier and a lot more fun.
Wifey forced me to not wear my favourite outfit to the staff Xmas party because I "looked like Beetlejuice."

As for the workboot thing, I don't understand it. I friend once bought me a dozen porn mags, and almost every pic had workboots. Even in the "office" scenarios...

  3. When it comes to fashion I enjoy being a spectator. Seeing the trends and the couture come trotting down the Runway is entertainment for me. But so far my uniform has been jeans and t-shirt. In the winter months a hoodie gets added.

I totally agree with you about the Arabs. When I watched Lawrence of Arabia a couple of weeks ago I was kind of jealous when he got his new robes from the tribespeople and he was admiring it in the desert. I also have the same feeling when I watch Rome on HBO. We should go back to tunics.

  4. LOL - I always thought the workboot craze was a little too ridiculous for words. Here you had guys trying to look 'butch' by wearing workboots, and then completeing the look by mincing around in skin-tight designer jeans, glittery tank tops and carrying glow sticks.

Very hard to keep a straight face on the dancefloor

  5. Dan: Don't forget the fact that those skin-tight jeans are usually WHITE.

  6. I have no fashion sense. I went to an all boys Catholic school where we all wore the same clothing, but even then different cliques and people would alter the uniforms to distinguish themselves.

  7. my greatest sense of freedom is when i stop caring what people think of my clothes, my hair, my makeup, whatever. i'm still working on it, but getting there.

and of all the people who have an opinion... the ones who remain are the ones that matter, anyway.

  8. That workboots stuff really exist ? That's the most stupid thing I have heard in a long while.
As for the arabs, I won't comment on that topic my reply would be racist. But for everyone wearing tunics, I wouln't mind even if I know this will never work in this world ;)

white skin-tight jean ? Would be nice on women :) I prefer black pants, black is a classic

  9. And while we are on the topic of clothes...who the hell wears a size XS (extra small). I get so pissed when I go into the Gap or Banana Republic and the only thing on the sale rack is "Extra Small" shirts. Makes no sense to me. And then I go to a club and see some twink wearing an Extra Small shirt from the Gap or Banana Republic....and then it all makes sense.....
