Talking to Québequois

Wednesday means I'm out the door by six. As a testament to my love for all you wonderful blog family members, I have been pestering my loved ones and students. Yes, I have been preparing something special for you (okay, maybe it's not all that special, but I did think and work on it a lot. Stuff even ended up on the cutting room floor.) I put together these two little videos with my cellphone. I am still learning about what I can do with the video DJ function. It's pretty cool to say the least. My big complaint is that it loses quality when you upload to Youtube. It's already a small file, but they shrink it even further. I really need to invest in a new digital camera with video function. I'm still using my first with a whopping 1.3 megapixels (1998) and of course no video function.


Anyway, the topic for this week's "Talking to Quebecers" is Poutine!







And now, after having watched the "description", here's your host with the real thing (I'll have you know that we had poutine DELIVERED. We have never done this before. But I'm sure (I mean I hope) you're curious by now: TA DAH!

    I love poutine...although I think the anglo version at New York Fries or Harvey's aren't very good examples.

    If I had to guess the non-quebecer it would be the blonde lady at the end. She has an accent but not as thick and french as the other two and Serge.

  3. Francophone descriptions of squeaky cheese? Funny stuff. Poutine delivery? Hilarious.

    That made me incredibly homesick. You just can't get the right cheese curds down here in the US. The American version of chili-cheese fries just doesn't cut it.

  6. Those videos were great. I kinda had to skip a little through the second one after my breakfast of egg whites - it was just too much. Food Porn if I ever saw it.

  7. I've never heard Quebecers call cheese curds, squeeky cheese before. And the BBQ sauce thing was new to me too.

    I'm so out of the loop.

  10. If some people pronounce it "poo-tan" I think they might be talking about something else ;) So basically it's cheese fries.

    In any case I really think this medium is excellent for you. I see a DV camcorder in your future and a video blog perhaps? I'm saying I want more.

  12. On my visits to Canada, poutin stood out as one of my favorite things. Screw the clean environment and reasonably well-informed public. Any nation that can create a triple-threat of gravy, cheese (squeaky or otherwise), and deep-fried potatoes deserves my respect.

  13. Growing up in NB, we ate "Poutine Rapee"(sp.) which is something totally different. I love the Poutine we get at Costco, there is enough "squeaky" cheese to stop your heart! Neat-o videos!

  14. visiting canada, i never understood putting gravy on fries. but then, they do the same thing down south in the states. however, putting cheese on this combination makes it sound yummy.

    ok so putting cheese on just about anything makes it sound yummy.

    did the poutine help you sleep?

  19. Ok...so I LOVED watching the videos and you and Serg...however I HAVE to say. THAT STUFF LOOKS NASTY! MmmmKay? It didn't even sound appetizing to me but I am a silly American. I was Ok with the fries and the cheese but add a brown gavy and it just lost its appeal. Maybe if I ever get up there you can show my partner and I the finer things in life like poutine and I will be sold on it THEN!

    I love poutine, and I'll even admit to liking McPoutine at McDonald's. But I'm a traditionalist - none of this poutine italienne stuff, or adding hot dogs to it, or other forms of sacrilege! (Found your blog via Coffee Dog, by the way.)

    actually, my partner who speaks terrible french and is totally paranoid about it ordered "putain" thinking he was saying "poutine". i lept in and said hurriedly that he was trying to order poutine, poutine, il veut poutine...

    and torn, i love that you have assimliated yourself so much into quebec that you call it "brown sauce" instead of gravy.

    btw, i love curds as squeaky cheese, because it's true, they're best when the squeak, i've bought curds before that aren't squeaky, sooo disappointing.

    of course i live in toronto, so i make do with grated cheese on my poutine. damn i miss quebec (or ottawa for that matter) poutine. *sigh*
