The first time I can remember being sick was as a wee child, maybe two years old, after eating a lunch replete with green bell peppers. The subsequent vomiting made such an impression on me that I spent the next 30 years unable to eat them. I wouldn't even eat a pizza with peppers on half of it (or picked off) because the smell alone would send me gagging.
I finally got over it and will now consume them cooked. (Raw is still inedible.)
What is the one food you hate so severely that the mere sight/smell/mention of it makes you cringe?
Cucumber... Yuck
ReplyDeleteWhen growing up my Mother would fix herself a Tuna Salad every morning for her lunch. The smell that early was more than I could stand. I still can't eat Tuna. I used to hate the smell of Saurkruat, but I like it now.
ReplyDeleteMy Freshman class toured a Slaughter house and we watched them killing hogs and cattle. They dipped the dead hogs in hot water and scraped off their hair. The smell was something I will never forget. I couldn't stand the smell of Bacon for a year after that. Now I can stand the smell and eat Bacon.
Is Gin a food? Twenty years after an evening of "Lemon Gin" in somebody's basement and the smell of it still makes me nauseous instantly. The other "food" that I can hardly stand the sight of is marzipan. I was on a transatlantic flight when I was 10 or so and the friendly stewardess gave me a fancy marzipan pig to eat. It was bigger than my hands. I liked it so much she gave me another. And another. I threw-up. And again. And again.
ReplyDeleteDon't even get Jason started on peppers.....
Liver and onions! The smell alone makes me violently nauseous!
ReplyDeleteSoft-boiled eggs. Warm gushy avarian gamete, smelling of sulfur, sitting on the breakfast table, with parents happily soaking up the runny yolk with toast. That childhood memory still makes me lose my appetite.
ReplyDeleteTripe. I had to eat it one night when I worked at Arnaud's in New Orleans, so that I could describe it to any (twisted) customers that might want it. Awful.
ReplyDeleteI hate the smell of liver. And runny egg yolks make me queasy (unless they're all mixed up in a nice carbonara).
I have no bad experiences of hating a food or drink because I threw up on it. For a while it was tequila, but I worked through that. I don't like watching people eat rare meat, but it's not to the point that I gag.
ReplyDeleteKaluha - the first alcohol I ever got sick from drinking... don't come NEAR me with a White Russian...
ReplyDeleteno food.
ReplyDeleteAnything with vinegar.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was VERY young, my uncle convinced me that I'd turn into Spiderman if I drank a bottle.
He lied.
Oddly, though it is supposed to be odorless vodka is something that I still cannot drink to this day.
ReplyDeleteI got sick on it once in my youth, and have'nt been able to stomach it since.
Onions and all their cousins (chives, scallions, leeks).
ReplyDeleteGreen peppers.
Sultana raisins (the sick yellow plump ones).
Olives.
Mediterreanean cooking is always "fun" for me.
Tequila and Liver. The texture of liver still makes my gag reflex kick in and I can't even stand to smell the cap from a bottle of Tequila, thanks to a three day tequila binge back in 1986.
ReplyDeletei'll join the I Hate Liver Club. the smell of it makes me gag. my mom forced me to eat it once and i cut it up in tiny pieces, plugged my nose, and swallowed each "liver pill" whole with milk.
ReplyDeleteBell pepper - that must be capsicum in Australia. I love the stuff, raw or cooked. Seriously, I can eat them whole raw like an apple. Sorry to gross you out. :P
ReplyDeleteOkay, what makes me cringe? Probably mullet. I LOVE seafood but I abhor mullet. :)
For me Saurkruat!!!! The smell just makes me what to cringe!!!! Also Candied Yams..... EWWWW!
ReplyDeletePeas. Unless they are masked in a minstrone. They make me nauseous.
ReplyDeleteAlso any form of zuchini or squash. The smell and the texture both make me gag.
I used to find the smell of asparagus repellent, but it is so frigging popular that I have forced myself to work through it.
Lastly lima beans. Their dryness makes me choke.
Not that I'm picky of anything.
It seems like most people can’t eat food/drink liquor because of a related illness (and I am really sad about Chunks’ aversion to Tequila). I know that once I got mild food poisoning from a pizza and I couldn’t eat it for years (better now).
ReplyDeleteI can’t stand seafood/fish, but used to eat it when I was younger. My current theory is that I got sick on it at some point, but don’t have any memory of it. Now, though, it turns my stomach (and I have tried many times to eat it again (including just recently, having moved to Boston and all)).
Hands down mayonaise. The smell alone makes me dry heaves.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't count that as a food, then it's seafood of any kind. Again, I can't get past the smell, plus the texture is so awful I can't make myself swallow.
liver!!!
ReplyDeleteParmesan, Blue, Romano, or any other cheese that smells like vomit.

http://ialwayswin.blogspot.com/2006/03/theres-reason-i-call-it-barf-cheese.html
Okay, honestly:
ReplyDeleteVinegar.
Fish.
Other seafood.
Mustard.
Milk/ cheese products.
Yams.
Peanut butter.
Brussels sprouts.
Ox tail.
Peach schnapps.
Whisky.
Lobster.
ReplyDeleteGross, gross, gross.
Ed's entry reminded me that my mother would make a fruit jello salad topped with mayonaise (actually miracle whip I think)that I gagged on every time as a kid. I had to sit at the table long after everyone had left until I finished my salad--I still hate mir. whip.
ReplyDeleteCilantro-- don't know the reason, but I'm trying to overcome my dislike.
ReplyDeleteCreamed Chipped Beef. My mother served once when I was a child and I knew i I ate it I would throw up. I said so and my dad became very angry. He told me to eat and not throw up or he would spank me. I ate it, I threw up and he spanked me. To this day I can't even look at it.
ReplyDeleteRye Bread makes me vomit...
ReplyDeleteTarragon... makes me sick...
Blue Cheese Dressing I love, but I can't make it from scratch (I once made 5 gallons when I worked in a restaurant)
couldnt eat it for years
Once I ate a whole jar of Cashews - could eat those for awhile
I echo the sauerkraut sentiment...tastes the way baby crap smells. Gross.
ReplyDeletePeas and Lima Beans
ReplyDeleteI'll eat peas, however, if they are masked in other stuff, like a tuna salad I make during the summer.
But lima beans are just plain gawd-awful
Does Tequila by itself count?
ReplyDeleteOops, I forgot to mention caraway seeds.
ReplyDeletewell as far as Alcohol it's Gin. I get ill at the smell of it.
ReplyDeleteI also can't bear the smell of Anchovies or Sardines....
Wow, people have a lot of violent food aversions.
ReplyDeleteNothing really makes me sick at the sight or smell, but there are many foods I dislike. Raw oysters, brussels sprouts, squid, ...
Unfortunately I had a similar experience as you with lobster as a child. And as a Maritimer, I was looked at oddly whenever I turned it down (and turned green) for the next 20 years. I actually enjoyed some lobster on a Caesar Salad tonight (I'm on conference in northern NB - did you two make it to Caraquet on your travels?) but I still can't sit down to a lobster in the shell.
ReplyDeleteTequila. Long Trip to Mexico. 'Nough said.
ReplyDeleteand I'm with ya on hating the bp's. I've tried for years to eat them, but can smell them a mile away. Occasionally, I decide to "test" them to see if perhaps my tastes have changed. Nope. Stil ain't gonna happen.
