Googling your childhood house

Did you know that you could do this? It's not available in all areas, but if they have the street view function, you can see what your childhood house looks like. The first one is where I spent the years from when I was 3 until 12. My bedroom window is behind the unhooked trailer.

I remember the Gonzalez's lived next door and I used to play with Matty, a kid similar in age to myself. I got into trouble once because I told him my Dad said that his dad was a loudmouth. Truth is, I didn't really know that was an insult. Of course this got back to Matty's dad, who then got back to my dad. I think I got a spanking for it. I certainly never forgot about it, as I don't any perceived injustice to myself.

Then we moved up to this house. In fact my Mom still lives here. My bedroom window is at the top left. It's now their office. Next door was a kid named Jeff. We were pretty inseparable for a couple of years until we got in a fight and he and his friend beat me up. When I ran home crying, I remember my mother refusing to console me. The way she saw it, if there had been a fight, I must have been at fault somehow. After that Jeff and I were no longer friends. I got beat up two other times in high school, but I kept those events to myself.

We should make this a meme. Go ahead and google your childhood house(s) and post it along with a memory. Consider yourself tagged.

  1. Looks like I'm going to have to do this when I get home to my Mac.

  2. I love this idea! I'm all over it. (For those with a Mac: if you wait long enough before the final click on the screen grab, the map overlays will disappear.)

I'm curious to hear about those fights. What were they about?

  3. I love this idea too! Stand by for my homes!

  4. Oh by the way, I noticed you take pics of your computer monitor. but did you know you can hit the "print screen" button on your key board, then open a photo program and paste the results from print screen and then edit it in the photo program?

  5. I went back to the scene of the crimes -- I mean, my childhood house -- in person a few years ago. It was a mistake. I will Google it anyway, just to see if the house has improved any since the last owners let it slide into semi-decrepitude.

(Do you remember your childhood phone numbers? I do: 567-4093.)

  6. My parents still live in my childhood home! I would love to see where I lived in my first two homes though (Oxford then London).

I can just imagine you stating that the guy's dad was a loudmouth. Kids don't have the understanding to filter.

  7. We moved around so much when I was a kid, but remember a few years ago when I went back east? I got to see (and take pictures of) a couple of the places I had lived. I'll see if I can find the snaps...

I didn't get consoled much as a kid either. Maybe it explains our shared fascination with poop?

  8. Google it? No, I just drive right to it nearly every single time I go back to Boise and visit. I love seeing how it has evolved (or not). Not nearly as nice as when we lived there and it was being well taken care of. So, that upper left-hand bedroom window.... is that where we shall assume that you began doing "you know what"???

  9. I only really grew up in one house, so it would be kind of a short meme.

In terms of Matty, there is a Mexican saying, "Children often say in the open air what their parents only say around the fire."

Not worth it. I've lived in so many places. Let's see:

    Health Ave, 02909
    Douglas Ave, 02908
    Cheshire St, 02908
    Clement St, 02904
    Mineral Spring Ave, 02904
    Woodward Rd, 02904
    Hurdis St, 02904
    Sutton St, 02903
    Atwells Ave, 02903
    Knight St, 02909

Almost back to point of origin!

I did make a horrifying discovery on Google maps though. I'm seen waiting to cross a street in one of them. I had to do a double take, yep its me.

I have to figure out that stupid street view. Whenever I've clicked on it, it didn't seem to work and I am sure they have it here. Your first house doesn't seem to have hardly any windows.

  12. Oh some people have had fits that their cat is in the front window and was photographed.

For me, they say my house is on the opposite side of the street than it actually is......so, there's that.

  13. No street view where I lived (nor anywhere in Canada, it seems). I tried to look at the satellite imagery, but none of it seemed familiar.

This is a great idea though. I was so young when I left my first house that it would be totally surreal to see it again.

Warm sentiments. You never have a bad post! I think I'll Google my old houses.

  15. Unfortunately mine doesn't have the street view. Then again that's a bit weird to get that close up to someone's personal property.

I would look up the childhood haunt, but it got flooded out when Hurricane Floyd Hit Eastern NC several Years back... now it's a city park in that town. Wonder why they didn't name it after me?

Oh well, The remainder of family childhood was on the family farm and I visit it frequently; but would like to shield my personal property from google-eyes I think... I like my privacy, and wouldn't want my naked sunbathing on the back deck to scare innocent on lookers!

Oh God.. last weekend I spent almost 2 hours with StreetView, "visiting" my childhood neighborhood in the North Bronx. It was moving and disquieting, and wondrous.

Absolutely amazing that I could "walk" along my childhood paths, roaming far and wide, seeing houses and places that just brought back such a powerful flood of memories. Intense nostalgia, you can't go home again, etc. It was astonishing, immersive, and emotionally draining. But worth it. Amazing times we live in.
