The state of things

The house is a shambles. Boxes everywhere. The fridge is bare and the pantry contents are boxed up. It's times like this I loathe being a consumer. There are still unopened boxes in the basement from when we moved here two years ago and now we're going to lug them over to the new place. Anybody want a complete set of encyclopedia? They seem obsolete now that we've got Wikipedia online.

I can't believe we procrastinated for two years on fixing up this place. We've put in about 20 hours each and are almost done. Especially considering that I had two months off this summer (and last).
Every time I move, I say to myself, "This is the last time."

It never is though.

Wow! you have a complete Wikipedia downloaded? What is a book? Just Kidding. I'm sure this is the last time you move until the next time. It seems to be like having a new baby. The mother has such pain and cries Never Again! Then after it's over she loves the new babe and is ready to do it again. Be sure to make a video and take pictures.

We are drowing in "stuff" too. Sometimes I think it would be better just to walk away from it all and start over.

You comment on encyclopedia's touched a "sore spot". In 1974 we bought the complete Encyc. Brit. with bookshelf. I cost us near $500 as I recall. A couple of years ago I got the whole thing on CD - FREE - when I bought my tax software. GRrrrrrr. Now we're stuck with a bookshelf of out dated encyc's. If you find a taker for yours, send them my way!

Just think how worth it will be when you unpack - and put the damn encyclopedias out for the trash man!

I know what you mean! I cant stand moving either....why do I keep doing to every other year or three? I still dont know.

Don't worry about your procrastination. Almost everyone I know fixes up their house to sell it, and not for themselves.

Good luck with the move!

Moving up is good.
Just don't move down.
Unless it's a brass pole, then we want video.

I *heart* encyclopedias! My family had a 1976 World Book set. Total sweetness. When I was a kid I would pick one at random to read. As I got older I loved reading all the outdated goodness ... like Saturn has 4 moons and 3 rings. *heh*

FUN. I think my parents ditched them when they retired ... alas.

Have fun packing! *smooch*

I said the last time I moved would be the last time.

And now I feel the need to pack up and try to make a life somewhere new.

Best wishes with the move. Looking forward to hearing about the many adventures you and hubby are sure to have.

When I move next, I'm seriously thinking about getting movers.

Loathe moving.

Thanks for that suggested link btw.

Aw... poor sweet pea. I know how much this part of moving sucks eggs.

About the encyclopedias? you could donate to an organization like this:
http://www.booksforafrica.org/donatebooks.html

There's other's out there, but I've donated outdated books from school to charity organizations that get books like this to places that have nothing, let alone internet access.

But of course, don't think about that right now. Take care of yourselves.

I used to live in the bookstore. I hardly ever buy books nowadays, only when I can't find it at the Gutenberg or something like that. Sad. Oh well. Every time I move I swear I'm getting rid of my museum of forgotten curiosities, ie books, but I don't I. I like to walk in and look at them, for a nostalgia rush. Best of luck at maintaining your sanity for the rest of your move.

Your posts lately are reminding me of quotes from stand-up comedians. Not sure why.

A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff. A house is just a pile of stuff with a cover on it.

A house is just a box where you put all your stuff. When you go out and get more stuff you have to get a bigger box.

One of the few bad things about moving to Boston was knowing that I am going to have to move again in one year no matter what. Moving suuuuuuuucks.

Still, it does have a beginning, middle, and an end.

You should call this week's entries, Procrastion: a series dealing with the lack of time in the day... or something along those lines.

Repeat after me:

I will throw out the two year old boxes from the basement.
I will throw out the two year old boxes from the basement.
I will throw out the two year old boxes from the basement.....

Every time I bring a new box or some new crap into my house I think, I'm going to have to move this crap someday.

Sounds like you are getting to the home stretch. Stay strong, stay strong.

I hate moving. But I do love organizing. When one moves one gets to organize. Try to think of it that way. Well, unless you hate organizing too then it would just irritate you even further.

I've said this is the last time before too. But then 4 years later, a new place sounds so refreshing. Right now I think about that more and more. Keep remindng me what a pain it is to move!

I know what you mean. When we moved into our 1st home, a real fixer-upper, we did all the cheap things like painting, but put off the things we thought would be too expensive, like replacing the original but very worn 1940s countertops. When we were listing that house we found out it wasn't that expensive to get the stuff done, and we lamented that we waited 4 years to do it. We fixed up the house for its next owners!

We said we wouldn't do that again, but we did. We've been in this house almost 6 years, and the entire time we've said we needed a new kitchen floor. But it wasn't until we were fixing up the house to sell it that we finally got a new kitchen floor.

Why do we do this???

Good luck with the renovations and the packing!

a line or 15 from my favorite song from my favorite musical:

Maybe this time, I'll be lucky
Maybe this time, he'll stay
Maybe this time
For the first time
Love won't hurry away

k. maybe not the best, most relevant part, but it gets more appropriate as you go along. (plus I got a little carried away and will likely have this song in my head for days now.)

All the odds are in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's got to happen, happen sometime
Maybe this time I'll win

Now with feeling... tee hee. Hope this time = the last time! best of luck with moving.

cheers,

and it never will be. I have boxes I haven't unpacked since two moves ago. Every time I visit some of them, I'm delighted with what I find. C gives me that look...

One of those "de-clutter you life" experts was on TV once and she throws out anything that she doesn't use and love. Other things she take polaroids of for souvenirs.
