Here's how out of the pop culture loop I am. I learned yesterday that Ellen's beau is Portia de Rossi. Remember her from Ally McBeal? They've been an item for two years now, I'm sure y'all know this already. I was still thinking Ellen was with that other chick, but no, that girl moved on, married a guy and started popping out babies. I can't even remember her name.
Anyway, I read about how the happy couple wants children but neither of them wishes to carry the child. (whether it should be wish or wishes in that sentence is the subject of much controversy amongst English teachers) I imagine Ellen feels she's too old and Portia shuns the idea of deforming her body through pregnancy.
But these are just my suppositions.
More importantly, who cares? I admit I was interested enough to read the entire blurb in the paper, but why am I interested? I'm not interested because I imagine them in some hot and heavy carpet munching, no, I guess it's because I had no idea Portia was a lesbian. And I loved her portrayal of the bitchy character on Ally McBeal. Also, I stopped to wonder if Portia had been born a boy, would the parents have named him Porsche.
But that's me. Why is everyone else interested?

Um, just to catch you up a little further, Ellen's old girlfriend (Anne Heche) divorced the guy she dumped Ellen for and has now hooked up with some other guy.
My day is now complete.
p.s. Is it warming up yet? It's a balmy 63 degrees right now at quarter to six where I be.
Huh? I'm really out of the loop on this one.
I guess you missed the episode of Will & Grace where an astonished Jack exclaimed, "Portia de Rossi DeGeneres!"
'Neither' is singular, so I think WISHES is probably appropriate.
If someone wants a baby but doesn't want to carry it for fear of deforming their body, they don't deserve the kid!
PS. I've seen a lot of hot, hothothothot mums, who've got incredible bodies!
They have enough money that they can either adopt or get a surrogate if it's an issue for them. I think Ellen would be a great mum though!
I am interested because it is Ellen, for chissakes!
I'm a pop culture whore, so I knew about this story pretty much as it unfolded.
I'm interested because it keeps my mind from thinking about the bigger things. It's a distraction, and one I welcome!
I heard from some shows (on VH1 I think...) that the fact that Portia is a lesbian was not a secret in the inner circle at the time she star in Ally McBeal.
I suppose in a way it's similar to how Michael J. Fox can keep his condition secret for a long time.
That what we see and heard of this actors are more or less completely in control by the industry.
I am looking forward to seeing her host the Oscars.
Ellen lives here. Well, not here, as in my apartment, but here as in Santa Barbara.
I saw the two of them out to dinner at Christmas time. Well, okay, I didn't see them really until they scampered out the back door. They were sitting directly behind me at The Bistro, and my friend Henrietta told me I could turn around and look, but then she'd have to punch me in the face.
You know, subtlety and all that.
To further CLL canuck's comment, the guy Anne Heche dumped her hubby for is her co-star, James Tupper who also dumped his wife, on Men In Trees, - one of my new favourite shows.
I'd dump my man for him, too. Go, Anne!
Jane
I'm not fascinated, but it's nice to hear that things are going well for them and they are thinking about a family.
I see nothing wrong with them adopting. There are enough parentless children in the world, why is it so bad that they would reduce that number by one, instead of adding yet another child to strain the resources of this planet? Regardless of their motives, I see it as a good thing.
Porsche. Hehehe.
As to the wish/wishes controversy, which just the other day was causing hairpulling girl fights in the teachers lounge, I vote for whichever sounds better, as that's the true arbiter in matters of grammar(even though the pedants won't admit it).
When I see the name Portia, I always think of that scene in A Fish Called Wanda when Kevin Kline says, "They named her after a car?"
I think I was in grade 2 or 3 when that movie came out and how I loved Jamie Lee Curtis.
The subject of the sentence is "neither" so the verb "wishes" should be correct.
I bow at the altar of all things pop culture (being a soulless hermit and all...) so I've been following this from the get-go. Before Ellen, Portia was rumored to have been involved with Francesca Gregorini, the daughter of Barbara Bach, former Bond girl and ex-wife of Ringo Starr. By the way, Portia has a Bacon rating of 2: She was in SCREAM 2 with Luke Wilson who was in MY DOG SKIP with Kevin Bacon.
Yeah, I know...I need to get a life.
I saw A Fish Called Wanda when I was in my early twenties and how I loved Jamie Lee Curtis too.
Dickeybird is my hero today for his hot mama remark. Yeah, adoption is a good thing, but being afraid of what pregnancy will do to your body is ridiculous. You know... IMO. Not that I think we know what their motives are...
Also, carpet munching. I laughed helplessly. Forced Eduardo to hear it.
See, when I see the name Portia I only think of the play The Merchant of Venice. In that text, Portia was a cross-dressing female lawyer. I am not sayin', I am just sayin'.
Annyway, I imagine that we sometimes take an interest in celebrity news as a means to think about our lives. They stand in for issues that we don't want to address explicitly about ourselves.
Speaking of Jamie Lee, I heard that she was born a hermaphrodite and her parents chose to remove the boy stuff and make her a "girl". That's why she had to adopt kids. But her husband is the super cool Christopher Guest (A Mighty Wind). Not that I keep up with this stuff........
oh how i loved her as nell on ally! she and the biscuit were too funny. can you tell i have ally withdrawal?
i hope they get their baby.
and if she had been born a boy, would porshe be pronounced like portia or would it be one syllable? also, why must people pronounce it jag*u*ar? but wait, i'm going off topic.
Not everyone else is in fact interested, I would suspect. But we hear mostly about the people who ARE.
I don't know anything about Portia--I never watched Ally McBeal. But Ellen is cool; I like her. As for pregnancy, it is very overrated as to how it "deforms" the body--I know Hollywood females worry about that, and yes there are changes, but shit, they have so much money; why not go Nip/Tuck? I know what you mean about getting interested in what is unimportant: Anna Nicole Smith died today and I swear I have never given her a moment's thought, but I read the story right away. And I felt ashamed.
Anne Heche is on one of my favorite shows: "Men in Trees" on every Thursday nght.
I love Ellen, but I don't generally follow her private life. I only knew of her realationship with portia because Portia was on my favorite show, Arrested Development.
My straight roommate refused to watch that show because he had the hots for her, and was disappointed to find out she was a lesbian.
Anyway, I think they should adopt if what is said true. Still, Portia could stand to put on a few pounds.
Yes, I think that everyone is probably thinking about the name thing too...riiiight.
Everyone is interested because Ellen is hosting the Oscars in a couple of weeks and therefore her publicists are putting her out there for interviews and what not and convincing us that we care.
We are easy, us public, we go wherever the media lead us. Even if in your case it's to images of "carpet munching".
omg, I can SOOOO totally start keeping you in the loop. My life is incredibly boring so I live vicariously through celebrities.
Okay, maybe that was going a little overboard, but celeb gossip is like junkfood for the brain, and I enjoy it.
I never saw Ally McBeal (how out of it am I?) but Porsche sounds great..err great name!!:>)
I thought I posted yesterday but it doesn't seem to be there. Anyway, just wanted to say about your two babies is WOOF!
