Is that a faggot on the ballot?

The candidate for the Parti Quebecois, Andre Boisclair, is gay. This is not news for anybody up here, but it may surprise those down south that the next prime minister of Quebec may be, gasp, a homosexual. I don't know if he'll win (or if I'll vote for him) but I like the idea of living in a place where that particular characteristic doesn't preclude a life in politics.

Then some shock jock on the radio had to go on about how people aren't ready to vote for a faggot. Fortunately, he was relieved of his duties (temporarily). But it was a sad realization, that no matter how many advances we make in promoting tolerance, dissing the faggots never goes out of style.

It makes me want to vote for him just to cancel out the fuckwads who aren't voting for him just because he's gay.

hmmm... let me see... you've got a candidate who is gay and when a radio personality slams him for his homosexuality, the radio guy is suspended temporarily, because the candidate's sexual orientation should not be/is not an issue.

We have a candidate who is straight, caring, and compassionate. A tv "personality" calls him a faggot - because she cannot deal with his political views - and she gets applauded.

hmmm... let me think about this a while...

A faggot could never run for Governor of the state I live in, Indiana. Well, I guess he could run but he would not win. I would vote for him even if he was not from my party. Just to have a gay man in this high political post would be a great thing for all of us.

Inch by inch, step by step, just maybe society moves forward.
The town next to mine (in North Carolina) had an openly gay man as mayor for about 8 or 10 years. It was so wonderful to see -- in Jesse Helms' home state -- a town that flew rainbow flags during gay pride and elected Mike again and again.

Rather than voting for Boisclair (or anyone) just because he is gay, I would want to make sure that I felt aligned with him on a variety of issues.

As an anglophone Canadian, I have to chuckle at "prime minister" of quebec. It doesn't seem like you have a great range of choix up there - the Tory-Liberals, the Pequistes or Action Democratique?

Given Quebec's history for being ugly to lingual, ethnic and religious minorities, the growing popularity of the "no tapettes, feminists or hijabs" party is utterly unsurprising. Really, what the hell does 'reasonable accomodation' mean? Of course, being from Alberta, the center of all things Aryan, I can't toss (too many) stones.

Even if Boislair is gay, I always root for the federalist.

From a society that helped spearhead the "political correctness" campaign, I'm amazed that the term "faggot" has started being bandied about with so much aplomb.

And it's super to know that Canada has picked up on this trend too.

Seriously, WTF people? Can't drob the n-bomb, so we'll use "faggot" instead?

dr. demagogue - mcguinty is the prime minister of ontario in french.

Faggot seems to be the new "N-word".

The stigma associated with a variety of words is amazing. I have the "call me whatever the hell you want attitude." It only reflects on the guy using the words, not on me. Labels are not necessarily true. And, I think it would be very cool to have a gay/homo/faggot/light in the loafers/"that way" dude for your PM.

I hope to live to see the day when a person is elected to office by their credentials and their sexual orientation will not even be brought up. I should live so long?

He is always arrogant, unexperimented and old drug addict. He never did anything good in any minister he has been on. When I was working for the Immigration Minister, he has been there for like a year or something. I have been at his office. It was terrible, he look at normal worker if you were like shit. His france delegate he has over there was gay too and was watching gay porn over the internet (on the gov network). And yes our taxes pay for that. I will never vote for him. If it was someone else I might have voted PQ. This guys is going to get the PQ down.

He is a faggot ! And I really don't care if he is gay or not. Going to vote ADQ for sure anyway.

When "They" start making sexuality an issue, it becomes an issue for me. I'd be tempted to vote for him, regardless of his ability, just to show that his sexuality won't have anything to do with his job.

I don't know enough about Quebec politics to say anything about his particular qualifications or party line. Still, the radio personality is a good reminder that even when things seem safe, there is always the possibility that sexual difference can suddenly become a means to denigrate the non-majority.

What ever happened to Margaret Trudeau?

1. How do I move to Canada?

2. How do I get a Canadian ballot?

3. (and I know you can't answer this) How can a simple border between two countries separate one hate filled ideology from one of tolerance?

What a world.

I like what Lemuel said.

Why can't folks just get right with themselves?

Then we could focus on something important, like say... I don't know... poverty? Health care? education?

I like what dr demagogue said.

I say, awesome, he's gay and he's the leader of a North American political party. Woot. But I also wouldn't vote for him. He's a seperatist! No thank you.

And I'm sure "dissing the faggots" will go out of style eventually... eventually being the key word there. :P

it's so disheartening to still be caught up with so many firsts. here in the states, it was a Big Fat Deal that it was the first time both superbowl coaches were african american.

we have so very far to go, it's discouraging.

The fact that M Boisclair is gay won't be the reason he loses the election - his total lack of personality and more importantly platform will. Other than the "if elected we will hold a referendum" stand, that he has come to only lately because of pressure from the hardliners, he has very little to offer. And what he is offering can only quarantee that taxes will go up for the dwindling middle class.

As an Anglo living in a 50/50 community across the river from Ottawa I have always wanted the PQ to get into power, hold the fucking referendum, win it and set up their own country. That way we'll see if they can actually do what they've been whinning about for the past 30 years. Though where the PQ supporters who work for the Federal Government of Canada think they'll be working beats me. The Canadian Government is not likely to want foreign workers in its civil service - though most of them probably haven't thought that far ahead.

Hmmm... ADQ, PQ or Liberal - hmm lame, lamer, lamest... where the hell is the Rhino Party when you need it?

I remember when I lived back east Plattsburgh, NY (which you may occassionally hear about on your news given its proximity to the Quebec border) elected a gay republican mayor. A big deal wasn't really made about him being gay or about being a republican... but a point was made of him being both gay AND republican as those two things generally don't go together-- at least not in the United States.
