Already Monday morning. Got a lot done on the weekend (taxes done!) but I don't exactly feel energized for the week ahead. Sigh. Where is that chipper spirit I'm so accustomed to having? It'll be back, just as surely as it has gone. It probably doesn't help that spouse woke me up shouting, "That is so stupid" in French, the result of some dream he was having, and I never really got back to sleep. (Sometimes he wakes me up howling with laughter. I'd like to ride around with him sometime in his dreamworld.)
I've really got nothing else today for you. Except maybe this. There's been a big brouhaha up here about banning female soccer players from wearing the headwrap. It has been banned, and there has been outcry. And I was thinking how in our desire to promote cultural diversity, we promote cultures that refuse to diversify. And I'm stumped there at the *logic*. (I do think banning the headscarf is ridiculous. It hurts no one.)

It is so selfish of Spouse to keep those good dreams to himself! LOL!
someone has a case of the Mondays!
I've been following the headscarf thing too. They've created a huge mountain out of air. That little girl wearing it wasn't hurting a soul, as you say. The odd thing is that Quebec, who rightly insists on being respected for its unique difference in Canada, is rapidly gaining a reputation as the province with the least tolerance of diversity. (That whole recent Herouxville idiocy).
I can see their point. Today we allow headscarves and wraps tomorrow we allow a dead chicken around their neck. Why don't we put all differences aside during sports and out in public and pick your religion back up at your church or synagogue? Then instead of inciting riots maybe there could be harmony. Instead of trying to flaunt your religion maybe we could just have a soccer game?
Or we could just eliminate all sports altogether. Shouldn't those kids be reading books?
YAY on getting the taxes done! spouse's dreams sound fun. does he remember them vividly?
banning the hijab is stupid. what can people possibly be so afraid of???
I would say to the last comment: Religion going into sports. The symbol of the women oppression for many. I can also see around 4 women in hijab on a team playing with hijab, peoples wont be able to reconize the good from the less good players ;)
Hey our religion dont allow us to put numbers on us and we have to hide ourself in ninja mask :)
I'm for no religion at all in schools and sports and in most public places.
Im not religious anyway :)
I'm bipolar on my opinion of this. On one side, I believe if you come to a country, you should be willing to adopt and adapt to it's rules. (Granted this is soccer, but I digress) On the other hand, I believe we need to be more tolerant of different cultures within our culture.
I don't know which side I am on. I can barely hold down toast today.
During the holy times of Islamic life I can see all the pomp and headresses required. But during a Hockey game or Soccer game only the safety equipment should be allowed. While on the field one is not an Arab or a Jew or Baptist but a soccer player. If their religion does not allow the proper safety equipment then they should not play the game.
Yelling in French...now that wouldn't do me a bit of good, would it? I'd have to wake him up to find out what he was saying! My honey used to have nightmares and scare the bee-jeezus outta me at night sometimes.....but not any more. Life is better. Very much better.
I had my taxes done a few weeks ago too.....it's the first time in my entire life that I actually owe!
I wonder if christian insignia is allowed. These sort of rules are usually more about asserting cultural dominance than anything else.
I think because culture is malleable, allowing people to express their native culture allows for variation in the mainstream, just like seasoning soup. However people from elsewhere who refuse to adopt the culture they're in are wrong. It is their obligation for being allowed into where they are that they adapt as well -- and at least learn the language(s) of their new home. Why don't immigrants to Canada not have to know English or French anymore?
I keep talking in my sleep and waking up my partner much to his disapproval:>)
