Same post as yesterday

Wow, we had another record breaking weather day again yesterday. In the 80s! I don't know what nice thing we Montrealers did to deserve this or what divine being of probability we should be worshiping, but I sure do know how to appreciate such gifts. After living for 35 years in California, a hot sunny day was just the norm and boring as all getout to be frank. It's taken 9 years but now I ooze gratitude for hot sunny days now. (It took that same nine years for me to develop a major SAD face at the first sign of snow in the fall too.) We probably won't have any more hot days for a while, but we get lots of them in the summer. Uh oh, this post is all drivelly again. Whatever.

Well the flu scare is certainly living up to its name. As I was out working yesterday, I saw several news snippets on the monitors in the subway and at the lobby of the workplace. First it was the European Union advising people not to travel to the US and Mexico, then I saw the mayor of New York talking about remaining calm as they showed New Yorkers donning masks. Uh oh, this looks like it may be more serious than thought. The newspaper told everyone to be prepared for local cases and reviewed the best methods of avoiding getting infected. Here's the reality that no one talks about. The only really safe thing is to stay home and have no contact with anyone until it's over. Somehow we all believe that that isn't an option, but it will be if this gets out of hand. I'm still not scared, I mean I've had the flu and "wanted to die" during that misery many times. One more won't kill me (smirk).

Just noticed your Facebook badge, since I have nothing better to do today, I think I might put one on my blog, too.

The media is in hog heaven with this flu thing. As with all influenzas, some who are already in a weakened state will die from contracting it. Everyone else who gets it will be miserable for a number of days and get over it. Those who are at risk should be very careful. For the rest of us, wash your hands, keep your hands away from your face, and get on with life. And turn off the TV news.

I like Trivia Tip #3.

I love the extra gratitude we northerners have for Spring. I just don't think one can truly appreciate it without having survived a horrid winter.

Michigan now has a case of the flu. Buy stock in Purell, people :)

I haven't seen anyone in NYC with a face mask. This is all so absurd. These annual health scares piss me off.

I must try this trivia stuff. Fun!

I'm days behind!

The flu thing kind of freaks me out, but I know it's just the alarmist in me. The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it's manufactured by the media/drug companies. The procrastinator in me is happy we didn't get to Mexico this month like we had originally planned!

I saw your weather on the Weather Network and I was jealous but happy for you!

Looking at how quickly this flu has spread, courtesy of people on spring break, public health officials seem to be taking the proper steps. That doesn't mean, however, that the media aren't making a bigger deal about it than they need to. Apparently, this strain does have the H1N1 proteins that the regular flu vaccine includes, so I don't know if having had that vaccine might confer some degree of immunity or not.

Answered my own question. From the CDC:

Is the H1N1 swine flu virus the same as human H1N1 viruses? No. The H1N1 swine flu viruses are antigenically very different from human H1N1 viruses and, therefore, vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection from H1N1 swine flu viruses.

You are right that in worse case scenario staying home is probably the best idea. I am impressed at how quickly countries are responding. We really did learn since SARS. This may turn out to be not as virulent a flu, but any flu that has people between 20-45 years old dying has to be watched closely.

Grinding your Tornwordo sounds like a bad habit indeed.

As for the flu, there are, what, some 20 cases so far? Call me when there are tens of thousands.
