Trip notes and pics #2

It was hard going back to work yesterday. Back to reality. At martini time I started poking around travel deals which is something I do sometimes, looking where I could go at the drop of a hat. Travelocity has last minute packages and I like looking there. I never act upon the deals, usually because I'm tied down here with work. I found a good deal for a luxury hotel getaway to Chicago and when Serge got home from happy hour (he was pretty lit) I told him about it and he said, "Let's Go!" Neither of us has ever been into the city of Chicago. So I pushed the (nonrefundable, nonchangeable) button and this morning I'm trying to push away those regretful feelings you get when you acted in a drunken haste. Even though it's a deal, it's still a lot of money. We leave tomorrow and come back Sunday.

I know I've already posted on Vancouver, but that first day was so lovely that we headed out for a full city tour on foot. We started here at Place Canada near our hotel.

We walked from there across town to the beach, which was blanketed with snow. The palm trees seemed out of place in that snow.

The next day was rainy so we went to the science center. I liked the optical illusion above. If you click on it for the bigger version you'll see that the circles seem to be spinning.

Serge liked this one. It took a long time to prove to him that square A and square B are the same color.

Even the bathroom had little sciency educational tidbits. Still, they stayed clear of scat info.

This machine showed what you look like older. It was scary. And I didn't know your face gets longer as you age.

After that we took a trip on the Skytrain, an elevated train that snakes around the outer city. The rain ended and we got some good outdoor shots at the end of the day.

Finally, we had dinner at the train station that night. I had the shrimp curry, which was a huge, huge mistake. I didn't know it then, but it would cause gastric meltdown for the three next days.

My honey just had the same meltdown of the stomach (and arse!) on clams....never again, he says. I love the palm trees....I still blame this whole warming crap on Al Gore. And happy trips to Chicago....I've never been either! Oh, and one more thing, you look good at 60.

Chicago is gorgeous! Good for you for clicking. I love the pics from your last trip too.

I dont know, man, gastric meltdown sounds like it's right down your alley. :)

Glad you had a great trip! Have fun in Chicago, you impulsive kids you!

Love the photos! And am envious of your excursion to Chicago... have only been a couple of times but loved it and hope to get back sometime soon... although, ,I would rather hit Toronto, Seattle, Portland, or Bismark again first. Well, maybe not so much Bismark.

Can't wait to hear about Chicago!

Oh oh...gastric meltdowns in a strange place while traveling does not sound like a fun time to me!

It's funny to see Vancouver with snow...looks good on them!

Just a thought -- before you go to those travel sites and push the "nonrefundable" button.

Call the hotel directly. I have found that they will match their prices and the hotel gives you 24 hours or even less to cancel if you need to.

I go to TripAdvisor, find a good deal and then call the hotel. They have always matched their prices and I don't have to sign any contracts.

I have always heard great things about Chicago, one of my brothers wants to move there.

I think you still look good at 60.

I love planning trips I'll never take when I'm bored. I also love Chicago.

I plan trips I'll never take, especially when I feel very stressed at home.

I'm not sure the face gets longer as you age. That program might be geared for children, whose faces do elongate into adulthood. I have heard, though, that your nose and ears never stop growing. They grow slowly, but they never stop til you do.

I almost went to Chicago twice last year. Almost is as far as I got, though. Have fun!

Chicago is wonderful, cold but wonderful none-the-less. Lots of museums right there downtown and if you get a chance see a stage show there. I recommend Wicked, the Musical. I’ve seen it three times and it is very good.

If it is not too cold then take one of the architectural tours in Chicago. I have always enjoyed them

I love, love, love Chicago. It was one of my favorite North American cities (along with Boston and Montréal).

Alas, nobody ever wants to come to Detroit.

I've only managed to visit Chicago once, unless you count all the hours I've been stuck in O'Hare. Very fun town, though, and coming from Montréal you'll be less likely to notice the cold.

The pics are great, glad you two are having a great time! Chicago is a blast you will love it there. I know that feeling of drunken buyers remorse. Sorry the shrimp didn't go over so well.

it's so weird to see Vancouver under all that snow

Chicago in January isn't going to be the warmest place you could have gone but still...it's CHICAGO!!! My second favorite city in the entire country behind NYC.

The spinning circles thing was really cool but I don't see how square A is the same color as square B...but I'm retarded so that might be the reason.

As for your face...of course it gets longer as you age. Gravity will pull down everything eventually. But keep in mind it also works that way on your penis as well.

Chicago is a great city. I've only been there during warmer weather but loved it. Have fun. And thanks for the tip on travel deals...I forget to look for them most of the time. Flying from Toronto is SO much more expensive than flying out of SFO...deals are going to be crucial now that I live in T.O.

You and Serge seem to have a lot of problems in the gastric department.

I love Chicago.

It's not the best in January, but you're from Canada, so how much worse can it be?

Me? I was so cold there one time, I looked to do ANYTHING illegal just so a cop would arrest me and put me into a warm car!

LOL - have a wonderful time in Chicago!!!

You two are so cute together!

And have a great time in Chicago...it's a great city!

Yeah, Chicago. Winter. Cold.

Grew up there; moved to California to escape it.

Still, it is a lovely city. Go to Boys Town, stop at Side Tracks or Cocktails.

Big Chics up on the northside is better, though.

I LOVE Chicago (did you already know that?)

Definitely eat the Chicago style pizza, you wont' be disappointed.

Also, if you get a chance, eat or have a drink at Bin 36. It's a great place, and not too snooty.

Oh, man, you'll love it.

But cold... very cold...

B and A are the same color? I don't get it. I'd like an explanation here.

Birdie said...

I finally figured out B by looking at the white square above it.

I had briefly considered an equally impulsive drive to Chicago to meet you guys until the weather report came in: more snow. That, and my car's going in the shop. So close and yet so far! Another time.

Phronk said...

If you take a piece of paper with a small hole in it, hold it to the screen, and look through it at each square, you can see that A and B are the same colour. They just look different because of what's around them.

I love the science center stuff. OMG I produced four drops of pee as I wrote this comment!

Even at 60, a very handsome face!

Hope Chicago was fun (and not too cold)!
