Updatishness
Who's a good boy? Poor guy has been trapped inside for three days since it has been raining non-stop for an equal amount of time. This has put the kibosh on the magnolia tree blooming across the street. Perhaps it will when the sun comes out on Saturday as they are predicting.
Our election is over and done. In case you don't know, we elected a conservative majority government. When I woke up Tuesday I went right to the TV and flipped on the news and read the ticker in horror: Gouvernement Conservative Majoritaire Elu. The only result I didn't want and now here it is. When I went to the LAtimes website, I plugged in "Canada" in the search box. Not one story about the election. There was something about recalled cranberries though that included the fact that some of the recalled items had been shipped to Canada. At least CNN had a (tiny) blurb on the matter, but honestly when your next door neighbor renovates their house, how can you not notice?
I booked us a little junket the last part of Memorial day weekend. A quick big apple trip Sunday to Tuesday. I want to see a show, shop at Century 21 and eat at Nobu. We're staying at the Best Western in Chinatown where internet and breakfast are free. I'm sick of four star hotels gauging you for everything. That's why I bid on a 2.5 star hotel on Priceline for our upcoming (60 sleeps) San Francisco trip which is part of a Lake Tahoe family reunion trip. I was very happy to get the Hotel Whitcomb for exactly half the price listed on their website.
I decided to defriend all my students on Facebook. Since I'm a real college teacher now, it's important to keep that professional distance. My rebellious side didn't want to do it, but I guess I'm finally making peace with the man. I know I've been lax in my blog reading duties, I have so much to catch up on but I just don't have the time. Please don't take it personally! I'll check back in later this weekend. Cheers!

Not that we need acknowledgement from our neighbours, but a little recognition wouldn't hurt every now and then.
I guess we will get the same 'sun' as you on the weekend.....time to dry out!
that sux! thanks for the election update, since no mention of it was made here. now WTF happens - does all the progress canada has made over the past 25 years get wiped out by assholes?
Great blog, really, but - and I hope you won't be upset - Georgie does steal the show! What a cutie. ;)
I'm must be beside my mind but seems that I'm the only one who isn't upset by Harper majority! I'm still going to work to make this world a better place for everyone: kids, teenagers, poors, gays, women, elders, natives, etc. For me, nothing has changed.
To me, it is imperative that we keep our hopes high, IN SPITE OF ALL!
Cheers!
Some of were watching. My own stomach fell when I saw that the Conservatives had taken a majority. I didn't expect Toronto to shift, and I didn't know that the DNP (did I get that right?) was taking votes from Separatists. On the upside, these are Canadian Conservatives, and seem to behave far more like human beings, than the ones to their south.
As a Canadian, I was dismayed but not extremely worried about the Conservative win. They are much more centrist than any their US counterparts. Issues such as the abortion debate and gay rights (I'm confident) will not be on the table.
My only concern is the Conservatives' appalling record on the environment: we are scorned by the world on our terrible performance.
My "Plan B" has always been to escape the tyranny of the GOP and Teabagger Party by going to Canada. Now what am I to do? Looks like Denmark just moved up a notch.
Have fun in NYC. I've never tried Priceline myself because I fear getting screwed. I'm glad to hear you had success with them.
Poor Georgie. I hope you and Serge have kept up on your workouts, because Georgie is sure to give you both a workout when he can get loose and run and play!
As one your neighbors not-quite south of the Great Lakes, I can say a) I didn't follow the whole election (too much other drama going on, personal and otherwise); b) the AP and Reuters both covered it online; and c) I'm pretty sure the Chicago Trib (owners of the LA Times) ran at least ONE article on it.
Hope you and Serge enjoy the NY trip. San Francisco?? Sounds like Georgie won't be going. A shame, 'cuz I understand the Lake Tahoe area can be Disneyland for dogs. Has he had a chance yet to properly thank his Grandmom for that wonderful quilt???
It's good to keep the professional distance sometimes.
I don't unfriend peeps, but I do block them from seeing my posts and pics. I keep them quarantined.
What CoffeeDog said. All of my coworkers are blocked from seeing my posts unless I specifically allow them to.
I was disappointed in the vote, and I honestly wouldn't consider anything off the table now that Harper has a clear majority. Remember that he first came into office with a social conservative agenda. Still, the slow drift to the right here in the US has been weighing more and more heavily, which makes Iceland more attractive every day.
I just dumped a bunch of my "friends" on Facebook too. I'd delete the whole damn thing but I have Scrabble games to play. :)
I too, was stunned by the Harper majority. Not by those numbers in Alberta, because let's face it, I live with these wackadoodles, but I thought the rest of the country would vote differently. I used this voting compass thing I found on the cbc website and wasn't shocked to find that I'm so far removed from the PCs, we may as well be on different planets. Anyway, we'll see what happens. If nothing else, it means no election for the next four years. That still doesn't get me a family doctor though.
Sorry to bogart your comment section. You know you're old when politics gets you so riled up before 8 a.m.
Lots of good theatre in NYC right now. The Normal Heart will bring you to tears and if you can get tix to The Book of Mormon (I'm guessing you won't able able to on the holiday weekend) it's unbelievable. Other good musicals: How to Succeed, Anything Goes, and Priscilla (if you like more of a jukebox show). Check broadwaybox.com for discounts.
i think the defriending thing was a smart move! it's nice to keep a professional distance. that's my experience anyway
Enjoy NYC!
I'm just back from there and I really wanted to see 'War Horse' and 'The Book of Mormon' - the two big hits of the moment. No luck, tickets sold out. Hope you guys get to see a show that you'd like.
Saw instead 'How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying' - excellent production as well.
Cheers

enjoy your trip to nyc! that best western is right down the street from my favorite places to get Banh Mi and bubble tea! Banh Mi Saigon 198 Grand Street and Quicklys 237 Grand Street.
Hey, find me something cheap that will sleep 5 or 6 in Seattle or Portland the first week of August. I suck at finding deals.
I'm so upset that this majority will probably spell the end for safe injection sites - mind you, it's before the courts and they shouldn't be affected by the outcome.
