Workout blather

You know what I love about working out at home? Dancing between sets with complete abandon. Since I have the workout room set up in the basement, I don't have to worry about anyone catching me dancing and I get to listen to the tunes that make me move the most. Sometimes I get so into a song that I end up going nuts dancing the way I used to do when I was a kid, which is really not dancing but more a wiggling and writhing whilst jumping up and down. This used to crack my dad up when I was a kid and I hadn't learned inhibition yet and he would coax me into "dancing" for him. When do we learn inhibition anyway? I wanted to say from school but em homeschools and her kids learned it just fine. Sometimes I amuse myself since I have a mirror down there and I dance like Donny Osmond in that Weird Al video. I keep meaning to make a video of myself but I don't think I would be able to let all inhibition go and show you the real thing. I've already danced for you anyway but maybe one day I'll do one like Donny did. Sometimes people ask what I do for cardio and I usually say nothing, but I think the dancing counts. I don't see why dancing wouldn't, I mean the whole goal of cardio is to maintain an elevated heartrate and respiration rhythm, no? And it beats the elliptical any day, talk about boredom and torture perfectly melded.

Do you have a time and a place where you can dance and feel the music like electricity in your veins and you become helpless before it like a marionette? If not, you should find one. It's great therapy for the soul and for me, the main reason I look forward to my workouts.

I don't have a specific place or time. It depends what song comes on on my Party Shuffle. I can very often be seen jumping around like a madman with no sense of rythm. Except I only do that when I'm sure I CAN'T be seen...

I think I'm the most inhibited person in my family. Which means I'll dance pretty much anywhere, though sometimes I need a couple drinks in me first. Since David was raised by uptight Lutherans, I often feel compelled to sing and dance in front of him, which drives him crazy.

I just realized you did your "Urgent" video on my birthday. I feel so special.

I just watched your dance video. Now I want to see the "Donny".

I do want to see the Donny Osmand type dance. I've never danced. I grew up in a weird household were dancing was considered of the Devil and the rod would not be spared if any type of dance or rack and roll music was heard. I know this explains my warped life. I do think if I did dance it would be a lot like Elaine Benes from Seinfeld. ed

Dancing is exactly how I work out. It is not dance like you would see on a dance floor and I would never do it in front of anyone. I do it almost every day. It's fabulous!

It must be the musical theater queen in me, but unless I have specific choreography, I have no inclination to dance. Doesn't matter what the song is, free-form movement leaves me cold and uninspired.

That "I Dance For You" video remains my favorite one of yours! (I discovered it when I had some down time last year.)

I listen to my iPod in my car and at work, so I'm usually rocking out while sitting down. I walk the rail trail with friends, so I can't put on head phones. I did have my iPod once while walking, and I don't know how anyone can do that without dancing along. I mean, how can you just plug along with Aretha's "'Respect" ringing in your ears? You gotta move!

Please give us another dance video!

I declare your blog a shame-free zone! Seriously! It's my favorite thing about you.

I've been known to bust a move whenever it strikes me, much to the chagrin of my friends and children. Whatever, you only live once and how many times in life are you going to hear "Baby Got Back" in Walmart?

My favorite dance times are when I'm cleaning or painting. The last couple of days have been blissful for me because I've been in the zone. :)

Of COURSE dance counts as cardio, especially if you really let loose.

I haven't been out dancing in forever, neither class nor club. Time to remedy that. One drawback to being middle-aged in NYC, I want to go out dancing, but I don't want to stay up until 11pm, which is when most of the clubs START their evenings. Hmm. Need to think about that. A nice thing about growing older though, inhibition is losing at least some of its hold on me.

Dancing is totally good exercise. Think of all those skinny club kids! The dancing keeps them thin -- Well, that and the meth.

I like to work out at home too because then I can watch the instructional DVD that shows me exactly how to each excersize. It also means that I don't have to wait around for some dumbass to finish with the weights or equipment that I want.
Ps. I think that I have danced beside you in a nightclub. I've got the bruises to prove it. ;p)

I should make it a habit to dance at home. I can only imagine what I must look like dancing at the dance clubs/bars when I tend to repeat the same routine over and over. :-)

Sounds like Momma Mia all over again.

What a great dance video - delightful, shamefree and cardio friendly! Am I alone, though, in wishing you had a hat with some fruit on it?

I dance around the Nest whenever the mood and music strike me. To his dismay, I occasionally make the cat join me, but mostly its a solo pursuit.

Can we petition for clubs that open earlier for us "oldsters" to go dancing? That'd be sweet...

Dancing is SUCH a work-out! It used to be my only form of exercise, when I was a PYT. And within months of stopping the long club nights, I had gained 20 pounds! I say keep on dancin'.

You can certainly bust a move. I havent' been dancing in years, but I do occasionally shake it when I'm cleaning the house.

Donny is my new hero. Thanks for posting that. omg I'm still laughing. As for me, Donny's moves probably are an approximation of how I look. I've had strangers tell me how uncoordinated I am. I admire you so much for posting your vid and I love you in it.
