Hair, hair , everywhere

Sara hair is everywhere in our house. I'm sure I've mentioned it. She is not a purebred dog, she looks mostly like a lab, but the papers we got with her suspect a pitbull coupling with a lab to produce her. I don't really see that, but what do I know. Do pitbulls shed? Because I have never seen a dog shed as much as this dog, When the sunlight is streaming into the room just right and you pet the dog, clouds of hair billow forth, light as dust. The act of vacuuming actually throws so much hair into the air that I have to dust before and after vacuuming. Each week I collect at least a full kichen garbage can of hair. People who have babysat sara can attest to this. Here are a few odd places sara hairs have turned up.

Coming out of the toothpaste tube with the toothpaste. The hair must have floated into the cap during the previous usage.

Quite often, I have trouble with my mouse. Sara hairs get into the optical eye part and the cursor jumps wildly all over the page.

On a particularly dry, hot day, a friend came by and sat on the couch. She was wearing black pants. When she rose, there was a carpet of hair all over her ass. Now we warn people not to wear black.

I was asked about the hair that was in my backpack at the airport. "Do you use this bag to transport animals?" How do you explain that you live in sara hair?

When our friend had a new car, he complained every time we got a ride that we always left hair in his car. Sara hair.

Our next dog will not be a shedding dog. No, the next dog will be known for its amazing lack of shedding. Shedding challenged, if you will. I'm really not looking forward to Sara's demise (which is coming I know) but the thought of a hair free house is one way to temper the impending sadness.

Non shedding dogs - poodles, labraodoodles...and there are others but they are mostly just little snack dogs. The pic of Sara you posted a few days ago...she looks good.

Oh, but Sara is such a lover! I can see that! Hair is such a small price to pay for that love!

Our princess is a Schnoodle (Schnauzer-Poodle mix). She does not shed. She is "non-allergenic". And she is a love. But compared to Sara, as CoffeeDog said, she is a "snack dog" (only about 20 pounds).

Actually both Labs and Pit bulls shed a lot. My Buster is mainly Black Lab and he sheds. Like you I find his black hairs in the oddest places. Pit Bulls also are heavy shedders. I have found though daily brushing with a brush helps.

A non-shedding dog is one that has hair instead of fur. Some are, poodles, Bishons, Yorkies, Scotties etc. The down side is since their hair grows they need to be groomed about once a month or so.

I had a cat for several years. Believe me I know about hair. Cat hair floats around and lands where it is least expected. When guests sat on my couch they got hair no matter what color clothes they were wearing.
Perhaps a Mexican Hairless is the answer? One of them just won the ugliest dog contest.
I ahd a Scottie years ago and I don't remember it shedding much.

Ugh, i've got 2 cats. I've got more hair on my furniture than the floor of a barber shop!

With a Milk Snake and two Algerian Skinks, I can't say that hair has really been a problem.

You could always give her a nice coat of varnish.

I used to have Truman hair everywhere I went, much to my dismay.

Now I'd love to have just one more Truman hair day.

Our Fargo is a Siberian Husky. He'll give Sara a run for her money in the shedding hair race. OMG, it's crazy. Big handfuls of hair when you brush him. We could stuff mattresses with this stuff! But what a sweetie he is, as is your Sara.

Only the best homes are furnished with dog hair. It's something that makes me feel at home. :)

My new baby schnoodle was born last night-YAY!! They are very sweet and smart, but small snack dogs for sure. Probably good for city/apartment living. Sara is beautiful, and I think the hair is the price people pay for the wonderful temperament of the lab!! If it weren't for allergies, I could not have resisted the yellow lab.

I think there are good and bad points for any animal but the love they give is so worth the sacrifice, don't you?

I have two dogs and four cats. Pet hair is a staple around our house. The cats aren't so bad, but we have a rottie/chow mix and he sheds more than all the other animals combined!!

The other dog we have is an American Hairless Terrier. He has no hair at all! Here's a couple pictures:

Although he has no hair and does not shed at all.. he has his downside too. His breed does not pant, they sweat. Yeah, gross! Because he sweats, he has to be bathed about every other day otherwise he is too pungent to be around. Another bad point is that, since he is hairless, he gets cold very easily. As you can see from the pictures, he has to wear clothes. This dog LOVES his clothes and gets so excited when we get out a clean T-shirt or jammies to wear! What a fashion queen :-)

Zero shedding though!

Well, you know the Wonder Dog doesn't shed; thank god because my housekeeping skills coupled with a dog that sheds would not be a pretty sight.

But yeah, the grooming is needed, or else his hair gets long and matted. Not good either. I cut his hair almost every three weeks.

This is yet another reminder of why I haven't gone out of my way to get another pooch. I love dogs, but I think it's best not to have one until I have a significant other (who doesn't mind cleaning up fur every day).

I had a terrier growing up and she did not shed. Though, like Rebekah's dog, her hair ended up getting matted and tangled really easily and required constant grooming. My parents also had a German Spitz that did not shed much (and was a really pretty dog).

Have you tried brushing Sara on a daily basis? Maybe that would help control the hair flurry. Or maybe you could simply collect all the hair and build a new dog.

hello there, long time lurker first time commentor. i read your blog every morning, just love it. i took my blog down about 6 months ago and haven't started it back up again. about the shedding. we have a lab who shed alot but usually just the change of seasons. we have a boxer who was shedding terribly, the vet said she had some kind of allergies and gave us some pills. turns out he was right, no more excessive shedding and now her ears stay clean too, they were getting funky before. just a thought.

i'm not fond of dog hair either, but all my favorite people have it on their clothes.

most days, they're worth it. some days, it's iffy.

Hummph...We may not know the daddy's name, but Sara is purebred Love Dog.
She sheds her hair like a benediction.

I've been told that dogs shed more at the solstices, so it may be more noticeable right now. I've two German Shepherds and they fill many a vacuum bag, and have enough left over to spread around. The worst is waking in the morning with dog hair in your mouth... probably another down side to snoring, yeah?

I can relate. Buster is a chow/shepherd mix. The vacuum canister fills up after each room. At the airport check-in, the man asked about our dogs. Now how did he know we had dogs?

I'll see your shedding dog and raise you two shedding rabbits. Every other month or so they lose enough fuzz to knit a whole new rabbit.

Go to Costco and get a five pack of 3M sticky lint rollers. They will clean up all the hair off all your friends' asses/vehicles etc.

Hair is a small price to pay for unconditional love. Tazzy is a ShiTzu/Pomeranian cross who should not have shed, but does. And needs haircuts regularly too. The worst of both worlds. Be careful with mixes! hahah!

I'm a little disappointed in you Torn. I can't believe you're already making plans for when Sara is gone. How would she feel, if she knew? All these months I've held you in such high regard. I'm rethinking that, right now.

I was curious about you after reading Lemuels blog today. So I thought instead of lurking I would be an active participant.

You got me with your dog shedding
hair!! I have a pug(Rosey) and man, do they SHED hair. I clean it up every day and there's still hair everywhere. Where does it all come from?

It'd nice to hear other people complain about my worst enemy.

Ugh, I know this feeling well. Spounse & I have a beagle and a domestic-medium-hair cat, both of which seem to shed year round, so our house is constantly full of hair. If we were decent people at all we'd vacuum every single day. But as it is, we are doing well to vacuum once a week. We got through LOTS of those link and pet hair removers/rollers. Sigh...

It's all about the lint brush thingy's. I have had a dog for a month and I've got lint brushes everywhere. I wonder if you can lint brush your mouse? Probably highly recommended.
