This n that

I hadn't expected such encouraging comments yesterday. Thanks y'all, I feel like Sally Field. (For what film did she win her second oscar and gush, "you really really like me"?) There's not much going on this week, but work. Oh and snow. It's snowing again this morning. I have no reaction, just a numb resignation in my gut. I started a new private class yesterday and it went swimmingly. Of course, I had to tell the whole story of how I got here since that's the first question when someone finds out I'm from Southern California. I can do it in about 10 minutes now. Yesterday, once I was done, she said, "You've had a very adventurous life." I'd like to think so, but looking back it seems so much like it was the universe that made it that way, not me. I can't really take any credit. Plus I pointed out that she had also lived in different language speaking cities and had moved for love, twice. We agreed that adventure always feels better 10 years hence. Living it is never as glamorous as it sounds.

I clipped the dog's nails finally. Serge got enraged with me because I made her bleed. This only happens rarely and then I get the styptic pencil. She seems to hate that more than the actual clipping. She knows she gets a cookie when she's done, so she grins and bears it. Spouse hates to be in the room when I do it, but he can't help but look and comment. (Much like when I drive.) He will have nothing to do with clipping the dog's nails so I have to do it. Anyway, Sara didn't even flinch when I struck blood, so I know it didn't hurt too much. The styptic pencil didn't work too well though and she left a festive trail of blood droplets all over the freshly mopped floor. Since the maid had just come, I had to mop again. (I guess I didn't have to, but spouse was already glowering at me just for having made her bleed.)

Of the many dogs I've had over he years I have never had to trim their toenails if they spent a lot of time outdoors. Only the lap dogs needed trimming. If you can't see the vein in the nails perhaps they should be professionally trimmed. I remember trying to trim my Chiuahuas nails. It was a nightmare. As soon as he saw the clippers he would start growling and snapping. It was a three person job. He was small but determined. I'm sure Sara will be fine. It is harder on the clipper than the clippee. Good thing you don't have actual children. I can only imagine that Serge would have to be sedated when the kids went to the dentist.

I agree that the "romantic adventures of life" rarely appear to be so when you are living them, but later on they make great novels.

BTW, did you ever try cornstarch when Sara's nails bleed? You might try putting a little cornstarch in a tissue and holding it against the bleeding nail a bit. It should stop the bleeding and be less painful.

"Much like when I drive" This made me chuckle. I wish i could be a fly in the car when you two go places. Or when you cut the dogs nail again. i bet it'd be funny. I'm chuckling now just thinking about it...

Nobody gives ME a cookie when my nails get clipped.

sometimes i strike blood when i'm clipping the cats nails. i am inevitably more traumatized by it than the cat.

for the cat it's one little sharp bit of pain, and then for some reason their human starts cooing and apologizing profusely and doing lots of scritches and nuzzling. so, you know, it's not all bad.

Norma Rae, if memory serves.

Yes, it was Norma Rae.

I feel the same about the snow, we are supposed to get some more today too.

I can't do Taz's nails. They are black and he hates having his feet touched. I will pay people to do that! He needs them right now to get across all the ice!

My 2 year old practically has to be sedated to have his nails trimmed. I wish a cookie bribe worked! I have to wait until he's almost sleeping and then do the deed. He still protests, but not as much as when he's fully awake. I have never drawn blood ... yet.

It could be that the universe is responsible for the adventure, but you took advantage of those opportunities. Lots of people are presented with such things, but choose the safest options always.

I long ago gave up trying to trim my cat's claws. It was I who ended up bleeding by the end and nobody ever offered me a cookie.

Oh, people. Do some fact checking. Sally Field won her first Oscar for Norma Rae. She won her second Oscar for Places in the Heart, and I believe it was in that acceptance speech that she was happy that people liked her.

I completely agree with your statement that the universe is what made life interesting, not me. But I couldn't disagree more with the statement "Living it is never as glamorous as it sounds." I'm always reminded of the Pet Shop Boys song "Being Boring", I've finally reachead a stage in my life where the lyrics finally hit home, I never dreamt I'd get to be the creature I was meant to be!!

I have missed a day or two posts...but re-read to see what you were all down in the dumps over. (Or, hidden under the snow over, perhaps). You know, blogs -- like their owners -- have seasons. The good and the bad. The ups and the downs. Keep it up, man. You're always a good read. I love your real-ness. Your adventures. Your snow! I find myself needing to stop over-analyzing sometimes. Let it be what it is. Nothing more or less. Hugs.

Last time Spouse clipped our pooch's nail he made her bleed. To avoid staining the area rug, he scooped her into this arms and carried her to the tile floor of the bathroom. Later it looked like a scene from the Sopranos in there! Poor girl.

One of my German Shepherd/Alsatians is about 167 pounds. She doesn't like her nails done, so they don't get done.

I'm like Serge, a bit. I hate it when the clip hits the quick.

No dog should be fussy about its' feet or nails. If the breeder is doing their job right, those puppies feet are touched, pinched lightly, rubbed and just generally messed with from the day they are born. The rest of their life they never fuss about their feet. Same with their ears. Shame on breeders who do not prepare their puppies for the world.

Walk the dog's more on the road and it should wear their nails down. I too laughed when you mentioned driving - Brian simply closes his eyes and goes to sleep if I drive - either that or he claims he is danger of a nervous breakdown

Nail clipping is MOST unpopular with our Em...only on the rarest occasions have we succeeded in trimming a single nail or two...generally, we have to take her to the vet, where it still takes two of us to steady and distract her, so the doc can climb under us all to do the nails.

Worse than getting her nails clipped, though, is how much she hates that the *cat* doesn't mind having his nails done in the slightest...and might even be a little smug about it.

I can't clip the dog's nails. I won't, I mean, and leave the room if R takes on the task. I hurt her once (no blood) and ever since it seems like a sort of torture. It's one of my many idiosyncracies, this nail-cutting thing.
