Snow coming

It's below zero outside (minus 20 Celcius) and we've got a big snowstorm, possibly blizzard, due tomorrow. They're saying we're going to get another foot. This is on top of the 4 inches we got yesterday and the 18 inches we got a couple weeks ago. This is so different from last year when there was NO snow on the ground at Christmas. The streets have been so icy that I've had to learn quickly how to drive. My buddy and fellow teacher noted that when the wheels spin starting out from every stoplight, that's the sign that it's very dangerous and that black ice is everywhere. The only wise course of action is to go SLOW on the road. So that's been my motto this week, slow and steady. Turning is especially treacherous, if you do it too fast, the car just slides right into the corner and up on the sidewalk. I've seen it happen 3 times already, but thank goodness, not to me.

So the snowstorm is coming and I find myself not ambivalent, but multivalent. Like I'm giddy as a kid on Christmas Eve about it, yet loathing the shoveling and driving conditions it will provoke. Since I have no power over the weather, I'm going to focus on the giddy kid part. Today I must secure provisions as tomorrow we'll be staying home. Have a lovely Saturday everyone!

I so long for a snowy day and tons of snow on the ground, the last two years here have been drought-stricken and this winter appears to be following suit.

I envy your being in a position to have a white christmas! enjoy it enough for me too...

It is snowing here too but supposed to change to freezing rain today and then back to snow tonight. Ain't nobody going nowhere, at least not by car. So let's go walking in a winter wonderland! ED

We're (allegedly) leaving Heathrow tomorrow, heading to Toronto via Chicago. Wonder when we'll actually get there.

I'm thinking it's gonna be a mess.

It sounds like you have the hang of winter driving. Bravo! I remember as teenagers up north my friends and I used to deliberately slam on the brakes going down icy hills (on streets with no traffic) or in parking lots, to deliberately get the car to spin.

We are getting it here today, they're predicting up to a foot. I still love a good snowstorm...right up to the moment I have to go out into it. Then, not so much.

Daily I see the exact same winter driving scenes you do. I sit in my truck willing people to drive slower ... and "just pump the brakes gently, sweetie" I say uselessly out loud. I keep a shovel and kitty litter in the back to aid hapless victims of both the snow and their own inability to negotiate the white stuff. We have warmed up to just below zero. It feels tropical after the -20's of this past week. No storm on the horizon, but we already have a ton of snow.

Enjoy the giddy kid in you, today! Do you have a crazy-carpet? ;)

We're getting braced here in New York for a big storm. I'm supposed to fly out tomorrow, but I don't see that happening. No point in getting huffy at the weather, as you say.

I still get giddy anytime there is a snow-day, even now when it is just as likely to mean I a day's wages. Suddenly having time I didn't expect, it still feels like a gift.

It's coming down hard now: four inches this morning, expecting ten to twelve MORE tonight. I was all set with homemade soup last night. Then I got up this morning and discovered that I'd left it sitting out to cool and never put it in the fridge. A quick run to the grocery (which was packed), and now I'm doing it all over again. But homemade chicken vegetable soup is the perfect accompaniment to watching the snow make everything beautiful. Y'all be careful out there.

We're going to get that storm starting this afternoon into tomorrow. We're at the southern edge of it though, so depending on the way it travels, we'll either get 1-3 inches of snow with ice, sleet and freezing rain, or a foot of snow.

I dont know which I'd prefer. BUt I know tomorrow is a stay-at-home day for me! :)

HUGS...

Tons of the white shit on the way, eh? It doesn't get much better than that! Happy days, be safe and warm.

I'm glad you're being careful. It'll be great later with delicious food and even more delicious spouse watching the snow from your cozy iving room.

Hugs.

Meanwhile I am getting the bike out to ride up my fave coastal route.

Hard to believe that we live in the same country.

multivalent. Nice.

Here in RI we're supposed to get snow then sleet then rain with freezing temps turning the whole thing to ice.

I shoveled about three times with the prior storm just to keep up with it. The third time was just a neaten up and throw the rock salt down.

Got my big bag of rock salt so I'm ready. And if it snows/sleets/gets icy after Wednesday too bad, I won't be here.

We're expecting some of that winter joy tomorrow. But wow, you've been hit. It's true: you can't control nature, but don't you hate it when it controls you?

i'd rather have it snow than not. if it's going to be cold and gray and miserable, it might as well be pretty and snowy. but yeah, i hate driving in it with all the morons who don't follow your advice to slow down.

Is this your first winter in the great white north?
I like "multivalent."

I love the energy in the air when a big snow storm is coming but it hasn't started snowing yet. Its exciting!

In the DC area such a prediction would mean masses of people buying up all the food they can possibly reach, as if they were going into a bomb shelter for 3 months, rather than possibly staying indoors for a day or two.

Enjoy!

Mark :-)
