This and that

We watched Sixteen Candles in class yesterday. I chose this because it is relatively easy to follow even if you don't catch everything that is said. And there are plenty of visual jokes too. Still, I had to explain some of the idiomatic expressions used in the film. (There's no explaining those 80's hairstyles, but that's another post.)

Don't have a cow. (remember that one?) = Do not express such a negative reaction

She got her monthly bill = She's bleeding like a stuck pig

Geek = unpopular kid

Faggot = politically incorrect epithet (lol)

Did you know there's a baby faced John Cusack in the film? He plays one of Anthony Michael Hall's cohorts. It's funny how he was just a bit player in the film, but he's the one who went on to the greatest success. Whatever happened to Molly Ringwald and Hall?

Happy Thanksgiving to all my peeps south of the border. Eat some turkey for me. I'm off to a full day, regular Thursday as it is up here.

Did you have to explain "Long Duck Dong?" I had a big crush on one guy in that movie.

When I was 17 and on a school trip in Athens we met some local guys and rented some movies to watch at their house. One of the movies was "Footloose" and the Greeks just thought we were all crazy.....I guess it was a different, bigger world then.

Perhaps it is appropriate for us to wish you all up there a very happy third Thursday of November - meaning seriously that we hope you and Spouse (and all our Canadian friends) have a great day today, holiday or not. HUGS!

oh! I totally LOVE that movie. Classic.

I will eat some bird for ya!

Cheers!

And don't forget John's most talented sister Joan, who was the girl wearing the scoliosis brace and having trouble at the drinking fountain. Ha! I love that film.

Anthony Michael Hall is (was?) on the TV series "The Dead Zone." Molly is now a serious actress, having appeared on b'way serveral times in the last few years. I think she went on as Sally in "Cabaret" and didn't suck.

Don't forget Long Duck Dong, the exchange student!

"No more yankee my wankee!"
Did you translate that?

Now I'll have to go and re-watch that movie. It was so long ago, and I was probably drunk when I saw it. I don't remember much of it.

Well, have a happy Thursday, anyway. It's almost Friday! ;)

I love "don't have a cow", but I don't think I saw the flick. I'd rather live in Montreal than celebrate the death of another bird and more Puritanical sexual repression along with the demise of the Native Americans. I'm not fond of the holidays, but it is a day off.

Hall is in the Dead Zone (on TV) now.

I never really cared for ol' Molly.

Oh yes the 80's, the days before certain choices were made with their unfortunate consequences.

Sixteen Candles is one of my favorites! When AMHall is under the table squeaking "Jake! Jake!" Well, I laugh every time.

I saw that movie in the rain at the drive-in... which is gone now.

Loved it. Just loved it. I think I was 15 years old when it came out.

It's raining and cold here in the country; we're eating the 26 pound bird around 6 pm.

I love Thanksgiving. No presents, it's all about being together and sharing and being, well, thankful.

Happy day.

Funny how that movie stuck with so many of us.

I remember being at a restaurant for a party once, and a gong sounded. Without apparent reason, I looked over at Nomrlr and said "you know, the weird Chinese guy in Mike's room."

Nobody else got it, but he started dribbling food, laughing.

That's why I'm so gorged! I ate my share of turkey and some for you, too! Now it makes sense! :)

I loved 16 candles because it came out the year I turned 15, and I could so identify with everything in it.

I have always loved Molly, yet never for one second found John Cusak interesting or attractive.

Happy (American) Thanksgiving!

I know you already celebrated yours, but I had to wish it nonetheless.

*hugs*

When I saw Sixteen Candles at the cinema, there was a guy doing 'the worm' up and down the aisles. I remember seeing his legs flip up and down. God I'm old.

To quote "Latter Days", Molly Ringwald is one of the great underrated "ag factresses" of our time.
Another great '80's movie might be Peggy Sue Got Married.
Whatever happened to Kathleen Turner?

Wow! That brings back some happy memories. My favorite character was the foreign exchange student, Long Duck Dong.
A couple of other great 80's movies: Breakfast Club, St. Elmo's Fire, & Less Than Zero

I loved that movie and may others (Cian mentioned) but my fav was "About Last Night." I had no idea those popular expressions were from that movie though.

I'll have you know that I saw Molly Ringwald in a touring production of Sweet Charity last month. She was cute. Can't really sing (which is unfortunate, considering it was a musical) but she did well besides that small fact.

I loved that movie. I didn't realize it at the time, but I so wanted my own Jake to sweep in and bring first love to me, too. I loved the soundtrack as well, all my favorite 80's New Wave tunes.

Yep, John and Joan Cusack were both in that movie. And Molly Ringwald has been doing a lot of musical theater lately.

On the flip side, a movie that John Cusak starred in, High Fidelity, is now a musical on Broadway. I saw in on Friday and it was pretty good.
