Friday morning train ride

Friday mornings are the toughest. I have to get up at quarter to five and be out of the house by quarter to six. I catch the bus to the metro and then the metro to the commuter train station. I take the 6:30 commuter train out to the burbs and start class at 7. Yesterday, I got on the train and was alone in the car. I took a little video which shows how puffy and tired I look at that time of day. Also, it was -22 C (ten below farenheit) which is why steam was rising off the river. Here have a look.

Shortly after the video, we arrived at my stop. The train was running behind so I was already going to be ten minutes late. When the train stopped, the doors made a grinding sound but did not open. What! Wait! So I ran to the other end of the car to exit those doors, but they were also closed. Then I heard the "ding ding ding" which means the doors are closing and the train is leaving. I panicked and started pushing all the (authorized personnel only) buttons, green ones, red ones, yellow ones but nothing happened. The train began to move. "Ahhhh, nooooo, waaaaait!" I said pounding on the doors. Just then, the conductor appeared and I waved at him and screamed, "The doors didn't open!" So he radioed the engineer and restopped the train, unlocked the doors and let me out. It's pretty funny thinking about it now, but not as it was happening.

That's a nightmare worthy of Kafka!

My second semester of law school, one professor insisted that her class be scheduled on Friday mornings. She went out of her way to arrange it, so as to accommodate her schedule.

We were the only group in the first year class that had any Friday classes in the second semester -- and in the morning!

I never forgave her for that.

You mentioned getting a car in a previous post. Advantage: you control your vehicle. Disadvantage: everyone else controls their vehicles.

I'm sure at the time you had a minor panic attack. Here's hoping it doesn't happen again.

The only thing someone could teach me at seven in the morning is how to breathe. No shit! Who can learn anything that early? Yikes!

Ack - I look puffy and tired in the morning too, what's up with that?

I, too, am sometimes required to be at work by 7am. On bitterly cold winter days even the air gleams crystalline and white. I've had a few mornings when my truck doors were frozen shut, but that's not as bad as being trapped inside and not being able to get out. I would have felt panicky, too.

I am terrible with the trains and if I don't get off at the stop I know, I segue immediately into full meltdown.

You were very brave.

Wow, I would have freaked on the train too!

Your video really captured the bitter COLD there.

I'm so incredibly glad that I'm back home in Arizona now, after working in Des Moines last month in zero degrees for three weeks.

I hope it warms up in Montreal sooner rather than later!

The little white boat at the side of the water, by the snow and bare trees? Beautiful.

More beautiful if it wasn't so frickin' cold.

And I can just picture you pounding at the doors.

Hope your weekend is better.

Obscenely early duties? Frigid cold? Trains that hold you prisoner? I hope that you rewarded yourself with a nice cocktail when you returned home.

I would have instantly had an attack of claustrophobia.
Probably my only real and consistent phobia.

OMG! I would have freaked out big time! When I first watched the video I thought that was Serge sitting there. Then it turned out to be Torn. Too bad the video didn't capture your meltdown. It would be funny to watch now.
It is 60 F. here today I hope it warms up in Montreal soon.

Oh my god, it looks absolutely freaking cold! You need a visit to us warmer climate friends.....even though it's 50-60, feels amazingly warm. Thanks for sharing!

Very nice video. Wow, how cold and I have endured that train joy--scary as hell.

That happened to me on the subway once.

I was hoping for the video of you going "Ahhhh, nooooo, waaaaait!"

I know this sounds dumb, but that looks like an amazing commute and I jealous.

i could picture it all, as the doors didn't open. funny thing, that hindsight. it has a sense of humor rarely possessed by the present .
