Snippets

* Yesterday was the first day we broke into the seventies. (24Celcius) It was the best day so far of 2008. Collective joy pervades the city.

* In related news, I've inaugurated the barbeque. It'll be in use on a near daily basis until November.

* There's something about this billboard for the french version of the Lifetime channel that bothers me. I just can't put my finger on what it is.

* I've been eating like a total pig this week. Wednesday for dinner I had a frozen lasagne, then a corn dog and finally two grilled cheese sanniches. I shouldn't have, but I had half a dozen chocolate covered graham crackers for dessert. Still, I've only gained back two pounds from the 10 I inadvertently lost. In my reality, I'm wondering why it's so hard to put the pounds on when they flew off so easily. Yes, I'm a freak.

* We do not have a will. In case I die before we make one, I want spouse to inherit everything. Somehow, I don't think a blog post would hold up in court.

* My mother is now catching halibut from her kayak. I'm so proud of that eccentric lady. (And dang but halibuts are an ugly fish.)

* It's car crash season again, chez nous. The angle of the setting sun is such that for the next couple months, there will be weekly crashes as drivers don't seem to be able to read the light. Is it red or green?

* This is kind of sad, but the happiest moment of most of my days is when I'm on the ride home from work.

* Our ficus made figs! I have had ficuses for at least 20 years, the most recent of which I bought in 2001. It's done very well despite our several moves. And now it made fruit. Apparently this is rare for an indoor ficus to bear fruit. Also notable is that the fruit is the flower. In its native asia, a certain wasp is relied upon to pierce the fruit-slash-flower and pollinate it. They are absent here.

Wow, ficus fruit, impressive!

I have a ficus I inherited from a friend. He almost killed it when I took it over. I left it out on the deck and it made a come back. Ficus can be tricky, very fussy. I have found that they do best w/morning light. We are lucky that we have an indoor area that gets lots of morning light. During the summer we let it stay out on the deck full time and it thrives. We bring it back in for winter and it loses a lot of leaves, always to gain them back and more in the summer.

You're finally warming up, yeah! I cooked dead cow flesh (steaks) on my grill yesterday. Delicious!
I woke up this morning and somebody was shaking my bed. I got up and walked around and the floor started shaking. It was a rare 5.4 earthquake here in the Midwest. I remember having one back in the 80's. That time I was outside and my chain link fence started shaking and rattling. Ed

That billboard is very disturbing. I find the image unsettling. It looks like a knife in the woman's back, albeit an all natural fruit knife.

I envy your body's metabolism.

That same guy was shaking my bed, too, Ed. I was here in Indiana for that earthquake in the 80s. We bought earthquake insurance after our basement was damaged. Allstate discontinued coverage last year. Figures.

Hey, Torn, I love your mom's sense of adventure. Why aren't you out there with her?

I know that happy ride home from work. It's the blissful few minutes of no responsibility. I enjoy them with music from my iPod. Not even traffic can take away the pleasure of that ride.

I think the reason you lost weight easily is because of your muscle. More muscle = more calories the body can burn on a daily basis.

I'm not aware of the inheritance laws in Quebec, but I would urge you to minimally pick up some document templates for wills, complete them, have them witnessed and file them safely. You can find them (in English) in the cheap software sections of Staples/Office Depot in the states usually for less than US$10 (which is now probably only CA$5 ;) ). Of course, doing it with a lawyer is better, but I would think the template version would carry more weight in court than a blog post. :-D

The body naturally resists changes to its accustomed state. Extreme circumstances, like illness or imprisonment by an Evil Duke, can change the body more quickly, but normally it is a long road to either lose or gain weight simply through diet and exercise.

Do not use a lawyer, use a notary to write your will.
In Quebec, a notarial will is valid without having to go to court. It makes things easier, and much quicker, for your liquidator (Quebec term for executor). If you use a lawyer, when you die your liquidator will have to go to court and have the will probated (at an extra cost).
In the meantime, in your own handwriting (don't type it), write out a will, and sign it. It is just as valid as the lawyer's will, and like it, would have to be probated.
Probating a will adds weeks, or months, to the process. If you have joint bank account, or assets, the survivor can have trouble accessing them until probate is complete.
Write out a will, in case you're hit by a bus, and then make an appointment with a notary (should cost around $200-250.

Your ficus made figs because it had to look at that billboard and had no choice.

That billboard really, really disturbs the shit out of me.

Ficus is so 70's. I love them.

I remember buying my mother one a long time ago.

Hmmm. Halibut.

Glad to hear spring has finally found you up there! Congratulations on the ficcus success...wow, I'd forgotten figs come from them, having seen them die more often than anything else.

Also jealous of your metabolism.

You mean, spouse gets everything except the Bagels, right?

I want to be just like your mother when I grow up. Or don't.

I'm wondering why it's so hard to put the pounds on.

Words I'd kill to be able to say.

Happy grilling! (Only where there's smoke is there barbeque.) What a snob I am!

I see it as taking a bite out of an apple. ( but, what do I know?!)

We wrote our Wills with a lawyer friend of ours throwing it together and witnessed by more friends when we lived in Chicago. We were one couple out of 3,000 who were married in Oregon only to have it annulled one year later. We recently were domestic partnered here in Washington State. One can not protect themselves too much living in the US. What are your thoughts about getting married? The Wills are your next line of defense but if we were living in Canada, there would be no question about getting married. Good luck with your choices.( Canada is light-years ahead of the US when it comes to social issues. )

What you had on Wednesday sounds like how I eat when I have the PMS. :)

That billboard looks like the lower back of woman. No wonder it's freaking you out. haha!

I don't have a will either. I'm working on it though.

sanniches?
Uh-oh...my disease is catching.

Today glory of glories it hit 80F here in Providence. I took a nice little walk. I'm one of those who loves the warm weather and really HATE th cold.

As for plants, I've killed a number of Ficus since I neglected to water them. Now I've corrected that behavior.

I had a Bird of Paradise that was just starting to flower before one of my cats decided it just tasted too good.

I know have a spider plant that's flowering like crazy too.

I wasn't aware that ficus fruited. Makes sense, though. I am relieved that the asian wasp isn't flying around your apartment.

What's wrong with that billboard? Looks nice to me. That stem would itch like crazy, though.

Congrats on the warm temps!

your ficus must have experienced immaculate pollenation! Glad your part of the world is warming up. It was a long, long winter.

I cannot believe what your ficus did! We have had ours for 22 years and it has never done that. I will now scowl at it until it does it.

If you want it to stick, use a lawyer. I have seen so many people screw things up by lifting things off the internet or copying a document their brother-in-law uses, or one they just think might pass muster. If your desire to provide for your partner is real, then do it right, and do it for him.

My eyes just opened wide when I saw what you ate the other night. Wowee.

And I kill ficus. I don't know why, because it's not like I kill all plants. Just ficus. They don't like me, I guess.

And everything BUT a small little journal goes to Serge. I've got first dibs on that.

First I thought it was just the stem coming out of her back that was weird. But Butch up there made me think that maybe it's the inference of the person as a food item that makes it creepy.

I'm very jealous of your weather. I can't wait for that joy!

I don't have a will either, but I'm 22 and have no spouse or dependants... so it's ok, right?

inference... or implication?

Hi...........love your blog. I think the billboard has something to do with Eve and the apple.

Okay, I could really strangle you for that comment about how hard it is to PUT ON weight after you INADVERTENTLY lost weight when you were sick. You are most definitely a freak!
